Facebook Policy Updates on AI-Generated Content

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, recently made significant policy updates regarding the handling of manipulated media on its platforms. These changes were prompted by feedback from the Meta Oversight Board, which advocated for a more comprehensive approach to addressing the proliferation of AI-generated content and providing context through labelling. These adjustments mark a shift in Meta’s stance towards manipulated media, aiming to strike a balance between preserving freedom of expression and preventing harm.

The catalyst for these policy revisions was a controversial incident involving a fake video depicting President Joe Biden engaging in inappropriate behaviour with his granddaughter.
