AI Voice Cloning Risks in Schools
The case of Dazhon Darien, a former athletic director at Pikesville High School, has brought to light the potentially dangerous misuse of AI technology. Darien was arrested for impersonating Principal Eric Eiswert using AI voice synthesis software, which led the public to believe that Eiswert had made racist and antisemitic comments. This incident has highlighted the disruptive power of AI when misused and the far-reaching consequences it can have on individuals and communities.
Darien’s actions began to unfold when an audio clip was posted on a popular Instagram account. The clip contained offensive remarks about “ungrateful Black kids” and their academic performance and included a threat to “join the other side” if the speaker received another complaint from “one more Jew in this community.” The recording mentioned names of staff members, including Darien’s nickname “DJ,” implying they should be removed from their positions. The comments sparked outrage among students, faculty, and the broader community, who initially believed the principal was responsible for the hateful remarks.
A significant player in spreading the audio was Pikesville High School teacher Shaena Ravenell. Although she has not been charged, she reportedly forwarded the controversial email to a student known for their social media influence, leading to the clip’s widespread dissemination. This student further shared the audio with the media and the NAACP, amplifying the reach and impact of the fake recording.
Baltimore County Police revealed that Darien had accessed school networks to find and use AI tools capable of voice imitation. They traced the origin of the email account used to distribute the fake recordings back to him. The sophisticated nature of the voice-cloning technology used in this incident highlights a growing concern. Such technology can generate realistic speech after being trained on numerous human voices and can be fine-tuned to match a specific voice sample. Experts believe the falsified clip of Eiswert’s voice was created using a service like ElevenLabs, which allows users to upload voice samples for cloning. While these services typically prohibit cloning voices without permission, enforcing such rules is challenging.
The fallout from this incident was severe. Principal Eiswert, who denied making the comments, was absent from the school while the investigation was ongoing. He emphasised that the views expressed in the clip were not his own. The community, initially convinced of his guilt, harassed Eiswert and his family, necessitating police presence at their home. This situation underscores the ease with which AI can be weaponized to ruin reputations and cause widespread panic and distrust.
Darien’s motive for creating the fake recording was reportedly retaliation. Eiswert had initiated an investigation into improper payments Darien made to a school athletics coach who was also his roommate. This led to charges against Darien for disrupting school activities, theft, and retaliating against a witness. The repercussions of his actions were profound. The audio clip not only led to Eiswert’s temporary removal but also triggered a wave of hate-filled messages on social media, numerous calls to the school, and significant disruptions for the PHS staff and students.
The use of AI in this malicious manner is not an isolated incident. There have been previous instances where AI voice-cloning software has been used for scams, such as imitating loved ones’ voices to trick people into giving money or using cloned voices of famous politicians for robocalls during election campaigns. The potential for abuse of AI voice technology is vast, and this case at Pikesville High School serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and regulatory measures to prevent such misuse.
Superintendent Myriam Rogers and other officials have expressed their concerns about the incident. Rogers called the comments “disturbing” and “highly offensive and inappropriate.” The union representing Eiswert, led by Billy Burke, was the only official entity to suggest from the outset that the audio might have been AI-generated. Burke lamented the public’s quick assumption of Eiswert’s guilt and the subsequent harassment the principal and his family endured. He emphasised the need for deliberate actions to heal the trauma caused by the fake audio and restore trust within the community.
Experts in detecting audio and video fakes pointed out several characteristics of the recording that suggested it was AI-generated. They noted its flat tone, unusually clean background sounds, and lack of consistent breathing sounds or pauses, which are typical hallmarks of AI. Forensic analysts who examined the recording concluded that it contained traces of AI-generated content with human editing to add background noises for realism. The recording was manipulated, with multiple recordings spliced together to create the final fake clip.
The incident at Pikesville High School has prompted calls for more robust measures to identify and prevent the misuse of AI technology. Cindy Sexton, president of the Teachers Association of Baltimore County, highlighted the growing concern among educators regarding AI’s potential for abuse. There are ongoing efforts by the National Education Association to address these concerns, but the question of what more can be done remains pressing.
Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger acknowledged the novelty of this type of case in their district and emphasised the need for legislative updates to address the challenges posed by advanced AI technologies. The charge of disrupting school activities currently carries only a six-month sentence, indicating a potential gap in the legal framework to adequately address such cases.
The Pikesville High School incident underscores the urgent need for society to grapple with the ethical and legal implications of AI technology. As AI tools become more accessible and sophisticated, the potential for their misuse grows. This case serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the need for proactive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future and protect individuals and communities from the harmful consequences of AI-generated misinformation and deception.
First and foremost, educational institutions and public officials need to become more aware of the capabilities and risks associated with AI. Training and resources should be provided to help them recognize signs of AI manipulation and understand how to respond effectively. Implementing robust cybersecurity measures and regular audits can help detect unauthorised access to networks and prevent misuse of AI tools within institutions. Schools should also develop clear policies regarding the use of AI technology, both by staff and students, to ensure that its use aligns with ethical guidelines and legal requirements.
Furthermore, there is a pressing need for updated legislation to address the unique challenges posed by AI technologies. Current laws may not be sufficient to cover the nuances of AI misuse, as seen in the Pikesville High School case. Lawmakers need to work closely with technology experts to create regulations that specifically target the unauthorised use of AI for voice cloning and other deceptive practices.
